Below is the data for continuous variables used in Figures 1 and 2 and in Table 1. The data were entered in October, 1996, and reflect the latest revisions as of that time. Data for many variables, including homicides and prison populations, are regularly revised after first issued. Except for unemployment rates and inflation, the data are per capita. Homicide is per million population, prison and other crimes are per 100,000, and demographic variables per 100 (the different per capita measures do not affect the regression results since the variables are logged). The data are rounded to two decimal places, and thus results with these data do not exactly match those in Table 1 of the article.
